Sitting in traffic cost the Washington area … ninety million gallons of gas.

The annual cost nationally was … 2.8 billion gallons of gas wasted.

Traffic Eases Nationwide, but Not in Washington Area | washingtonpost.com

So…almost a full third of the wasted gas in the US is in the DC area?  Doesn’t sound quite right, even with our congestion.  Soon to be YOUR congestion; driving to work is one of the few things I won’t miss about living here.

Gravity's Rainbow, part 3

Yes I’m still reading!  It’s slow going—after a month I’ve gotten through like 160 pages.  That’s mostly (partly) because I’m trying to read it with the incredibly helpful wiki open, meaning no bathroom or airplane reading.  And hey, most people don’t make it to 160, so I’m going to go ahead and pat myself on the back for that.  Not giving up!

Thanks to ryleyh and keithbirthday for heckling.

foobarnacle:

headed to Denver for the week, then I gotta get real about this whole moving to a new city thing.

foobarnacle (What does that mean again?!) was an abstract internet friend…until we realized we knew each other in real life. oh tumblr!

The internet is a surprisingly small place.  Abstract internet friend came first, I think, because I recognized you that one day at Alison’s from tumblr pictures, and I don’t think we’d met before that.  And if we had, then WOW I’M AN ASS.

Foo bar = a placeholder name commonly used in computer programming, kind of like “John Doe” is a placeholder name for people.  Not to be confused with FUBAR.  A barnacle is a small sea creature that clings to things.  Hence “a placeholder that never lets go.”

Gravity's Rainbow part 2

One month ago today I started reading Gravity’s Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon.  Since it’s a really difficult read, I wanted to give myself some motivation to stick with it, so this post has been sitting in my queue and was set to publish today.  Why?  Because I want you, if you’re reading this, to ask me if I’ve stuck with it.  And I want you to mercilessly mock me if I’ve dropped it.  Can you do that for me?

I’m not sure how I feel about roller-skating babies.

Watching this feels like watching a horror movie.  I want to cover my eyes but I can’t look away!
